Why donate with cryptocurrency?

Donating cryptocurrency is a non-taxable event, meaning you do not owe capital gains tax on the appreciated amount and can deduct it on your taxes. This makes Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency donations one of the most tax-efficient ways to support Tunapanda Institute, a US 501(c)3 non-profit.

Tunapanda accepts crypto donations!

Tunapanda has accepted Bitcoin donations (thanks, Pineapple Fund, and many others!) to Tunapanda's main wallet since early 2014. Bitcoin has funded many of our activities and has provided opportunities to hundreds of great young people in low-income communities by spreading technology, design, and business skills.

At Tunapanda Institute, we believe in the transformational power of technology, and that cryptocurrency and other blockchain-based technologies can have a huge impact, especially for communities in the developing world. Our co-founder, Jay Larson, taught our first "History of Money: From Barter to Bitcoin" class in 2014 and it is now part of our core curriculum. We ran a 2-day blockchain hackathon in 2018, with great judging by Jason Eisen, CEO of UTU and Will Ruddick, CEO of Grassroot Economics (check out Jason's post). We are developing a micro-course for KASA (Kibera Aeronautical and Space Academy), focused on blockchain's potential impact on the future of governance.

We are excited to announce that, through a new partnership with The Giving Block, our preferred crypto donation platform, we now support even more cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Zcash (ZEC), Gemini Dollar (GUSD), Basic Attention Token (BAT), Chainlink (LINK). The Giving Block makes it easy to claim your tax-exempt donations by sending you all the forms.

We'll spend donations on important initiatives, mostly from our primary training facility in Kibera (Nairobi's largest informal settlement). If you would like your contribution to be used for a specific project, you can reach out to donations@tunapanda.org. We'd love to hear from you!
